Homework, Expect it Every Day
I assign homework each day. Students are expected to study for tests during the weekend and practice skills on ExactPath. I try very hard not to give tests on Mondays so that your child can have a restful Sunday.
Homework is due the day after the assignment is given, unless the assignment has an extended due date (projects) or a student has been ill. In the case of illness, the student will be given a reasonable amount of time to complete missed work. Normally a child out for one day will receive two days to make up work. If a child has an extended illness, more time will be given. When your child walks into the classroom, he or she is expected to hand in his or her work.
Simple Solutions English Grammar and Writing Mechanics is a program that St. Mary's School has been using for several years. Students are given a workbook that contains a lesson for each day of the school year. Please do not let your child do more than the assigned page in their Simple Solutions workbook! Students check their workbook each morning and it is part of our daily routine. Any questions about the work will be answered during our morning meeting. Second graders will have a quiz over the lessons learned the previous week on Mondays. Anyone who forgets to take home his or her Simple Solutions homework will complete the assignment in the hallway as the rest of the class checks their workbook.
Word work is a huge part of second grade development. Students will be given a spelling packet to work on throughout the week to practice spelling words. Spelling packets are due on Fridays.
Math homework will be assigned daily (except Fridays).
Please be aware that many times throughout the school year our week will end on a different day of the week. I treat the last day of the school week as a Friday.
Packing up on Fridays or last day of the week is unique. Each Friday, students empty their mailbox and put checked assignments into their "keep at home" side of homework folders. Look through the papers each week. There may be assignments that need to be completed and returned to school. Also, if a score is low, your child may redo the assignment at home and turn it in for more points.
Redo's on tests will be done at school.
